Created all 2D assets for the cult comedy FPS game 420BLAZEIT:2 including the games recreations of popular memes, which lead to the game having a distinct ‘jank’ visual style and garnering popularity with fans of internet subcultures. 420BLAZEIT:2 remained at the top of Steam’s ‘Hot & Trending’ charts for several weeks and has garnered an ‘overwhelmingly positive’ review rating with over 1,470 user reviews. Upon release the game and my visual work on it gained praise from popular video game streamers including Game Grumps and Pendleton Ward (creator of Adventure Time). In addition to creating the distinct memes and visual style, I created UI assets for the game including menus and iconography. Liased with an outsourced, international 3D team and provided direction on 3D assets,

Memes

Each meme for 420BLAZEIT:2 was human made and (ridiculously) drawn by me. We wanted to pay homage to the memes of old that we looked back on so fondly and would thoroughly research each included edition to make sure it would invoke the feeling of internet nostalgia we were going for.

After being draw, each meme would be ‘janked’ by myself using a variety of Affinity filters and then individually, painstakingly compressed and enlarged again so that they would appear nice and fried in-game. Creating these illuminati memes was a surprisingly detailed process. In total, more than 30 memes were produced for the game.

UI Icons and Options Menus

Even games with dank memes need robust accessibility options and readable icons. The game also had a variety of electronic devices in-game which required their own icon sets. In this case ‘UI’ stood for ‘User-interface Inception’ and I was responsible for not only the design of our game UI assets, but also our imaginary computer UI assets.
